Airmatic suspension
I have a 2007 ML320cdi. Whilst parked there was a bang, and the car alarm sounded. A physical inspection revealed nothing. On starting the engine a sound like escaping compressed air was coming from under the rear of the car. The digital display on the dashboard was showing the air suspension logo with the message 'visit a service station'. can I cause any further damage by driving the car?

If there was a bang and the airmatic warning is on the dash I would imagine a catastrophic failure of some part within the airmatic system. I wouldn't think this would preclude you from driving, but most likely your ride may suffer as a result of whatever is wrong - whether that be a shock that blew or the compressor that failed. I am not an expert on the system though (I don't have airmatic optioned on our 2011 ML350), but am generally familiar with how air controlled suspensions work. How is the ride when driving down the road at speed?

Haven't been out of my yard with it. Too afraid I'll cause more damage. Don't think it is the compressor, as I can hear air escaping when the engine is running.

You either lost the air line to the air spring or blew the air spring. The air spring is the only means of support as there are no metal springs for support. Driving on it will be harsh and will work the shock. You will need to have this repaired, but driving to the shop should be OK. I did it and then drove it back when they informed me of the cost, about 30 miles round trip. I replaced the left rear air spring in under 20 minutes for about $200. The dealer wanted over $1100 as they claimed that the adjustable shock had to be replaced at the same time (total lie).
