om642 oil leak
 

Hi
So the ML has sprung an engine oil leak, seems to be down the left side of sump and int the undertray. Seems to be coming from the front. Turbo inlet pipe is bad and cracked and I just glued it up to keep her running.

Dreaded oil cooler?

Dont assume that yet. Make sure your ypipe to turbo seal is not leaking. If it is - fix that first and observe if the oil leak stops. Even if it still leaks out of that seep hole please be aware that there is a lot of space above the engine that retains all the leaking oil. Your ypipe could be leaking for months and you would not know about it. So if you fix that leak - give it a few months and observe if the bottom seep hole still leaks oil as much.

The turbo inlet and PCV seals will leak but very slowly. Over a long time it can get the bottom of the engine oily and might drip a drop here or there. The oil cooler will leave multiple drops whenever you stop. I let ours leak for a year before I had it repaired. Do yourself a favor and don't go to a dealer. They offered me $500 off a $3300 quote to fix it. An independent did the job for around $1600 and confirmed that our 2011 had the orange seals and not the purple ones.

A good mechanic can use a bore scope to look under the intakes and see the oil cooler.
