Question Odd sight when screwing the oil filter cap off

Changed the oil using my new gizmo, a Mityvac oil extraction device. Love it!

When I went to change the filter I found a condition I have not seen before.

The filter cap came off but the rest of the filter tower remaining in the oil filter housing. To avoid undue headaches I screwed the cap back on so I could use the vehicle today.

The filter tower was in the housing w the old filter...but it did not come out when removed the cap.

Its been a while since I changed my own oil but I can't recollect that ever happening before.

You can pull the filter out, the remove the center piece and clip it back into the cap.

Has it been a long time since you last changed it? Sometimes the o-rings stick in there.

It's condensation build up usually caused by short trips.

Thanks for the insights!

Hi Tony...I didn't see a clip on top of the cap for the post to clip into...but will look again. O rings look OK. It was just odd to have the cap come off and not have the post attached to it.

Mostly shorter trips these days w the ML...anything long distance becomes an airline trip!
