Power Lift Gate Issue. DIY?????
The power lift gate on my 2010 ML350 operates both up and down as designed, but won't latch to completely close the lift gate. When the lift gate goes into it's closed position, you can hear the latching motor attempt to lock the lift gate in, but it ultimately won't latch at all. Any ideas as to what the problem is and if the motor needs to be replaced? Is it a DIY type project?
Again, this IS NOT an issue with the lift gate going up and down. That is fine. It just won't latch when the lift gate is closed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Can you see if the latch is currently open or closed? It might have closed by accident, and you can tell because the lift gate will not go completely down, there might still be a gap. You might be able to gently pry it open with a scredriver or pen.
I also found this on another web site:
I also found this on another web site:
open the tailgate and use a screwdriver or a pen to latch the latch at the bottom on the liftgate (be sure to fully press latch firmly)...the latch should audibly latch and stay. you shouldnt be able to pull it with your finger and have it unlatch. if it latches then the latch is probably ok. if it does latch then be sure to grab the liftgate open handle to unlock the latch so you can close the liftgate.or use unlock on the remote.
could also need a striker adjustment.
also it could be the hinge at the top of the liftgate door. one of the screws can break off and cause the liftgate to not close evenly.thus not latching.
