Open or short circuit, no rear lights..I searched

Hello all, my rear light stop working a few day ago. The emergency fog light on the left and the left indicator will work intermittently as well as the license plate lights. I used icarsoft scan tool, the codes are specific to the components right and left tail, stop lamp etc has open circuit or short circuit. E19/3 license plate lamp control unit internal fault, heated rear window relay off. 9023 switch open & close tilting, sliding roof is defective.. I check all the fuses, used the test light with the battery disconnected at the negative terminal and there is still a draw on power from the battery. If it's the rear SAM wouldn't the codes be different rather than open or short circuit. Any suggestions. thanks

You are not being informative.

You say nothing about checking/changing the bulb or if it is an LED system.

What was the code number and in what module?

Sorry, I thought those were a given, 08 ML350. I checked all the bulbs, bought new bulbs to be sure. These are the standard tails. I cleared all the codes, drove the car for a bit and did another scan. Current codes are 9600 tilting/sliding roof is not normalized from the OCP. Rear control pane: 9020, the switch 'open and close partition wall ' is defective, switch partition wall light and dark is defective or has been operated for longer than 25 seconds and the switch open and close tilting / sliding roof is defective. From the rearm SAM: component E4e2(R taillamp and rear fog) or line to the component has short circuit to positive or open circuit and the same for the left. code 91C8 :E19/3 (license plate lamp, left rear- end door): control unit internal fault. code 91BB: E17/6( r rear door entry/exit lamp) short circuit to positive or open circuit. 913F: component E4e3 R backup lamp short circuit to positive, same for the left. basically short circuit to all rear lamps. actual values: 12V, S88/9 rear end door handle switch not operated, circuit 15R relay on, F4KM heated rear window and wiper off. Also, I did find a bit of dampness in the rear SAM area, opened the rear SAM today and cleaned up some corrosion and reinstall but no change. Left indicator, emergency fog at bottom left and license plate lights work sometimes.

It would appear that the many codes would indicate that there is a water leak in the rear which collects in the spare tire area. This is caused by defective tail light deals.

Remove the spare tire and everything else including the gray mat and you will see traces of water entry.

Thank you Maj. Dundee, I think i found the issue just as you described. The motor or module in the spare tire which is enclosed in a plastic rusted and two wires broke away from one of the clips. I did browse over this area two days ago and it was dry, removing the first module and opening the plastic box screwed to the floor i discovered the second module.

I spoke too soon, it was the tailgate hydraulic pump wires that were rusted and disconnected. no affect on the tail light issue, I did notice something odd. While sitting in the car on my phone and keys in my pocket i heard static sound coming from the front speaker on the dash. I was sitting in the car for about 10 minutes when I heard it.

If the pump was affected so should the rear SAM be. So open it up.

Don't forget to get new tail lamp seals and the seals are to be stuck to the body cavity and not the tail lamp.

Thanks, the seals were done last yr. I checked the voltage at both L & R taillight main connecting point where the harness connects to the tails and V. reads 3.62. My latest code is 9183 cable from rear SAM to component f33f79 (fuse 79) has short circuit or open circuit. It appears that I will have to remove all the panels and rear seat to check the wiring from battery to the rear. Might just be a bad battery cable but I'd like to know for sure.

When you replaced the seals, did you install them on the body or did you install them on the lamp?

The 9183 code refers to the small fuse box where the battery is stored. Fuse 79 powers up the rear SAM.

I strongly urge you to look into the rear SAM

I opened the rear SAM, cleaned up a bit or corrosion and replaced the capacitor. However, I don't see a 60 amp fuse in the battery compartment. Looking at the layout it should be to the left of # 83. I'll check to see if 78 to 82 are enclosed.

Maj.Dundee, quick question. The rear SAM has slots for 9 connectors, the 2 to the left- that is if I'm holding it in a way to read the label with the part number correctly- what are those 2 to the left for. I'll double check but I remember only seeing 7. I found the 60amp fuses.
