There is something lost here. You were worried about the fluid overflowing while you turned the steering wheel, and I responded to that by saing that you had to replace the rack and pinion and to bleed again after replacing the rack.

Where did Y10 come into the picture?

My fault.
I just wanted to see if the culprit for the steering stiffness is rack and pinion. In post 7 & 9 you mentioned that stuck Y10 may be the reason for the stiffness.
So am I correct to think that in order to get the steering back to normal, I need to replace the rack and pinion? I only presume that the bad rack and pinion is also causing the fluid overflow.
Thanks,

But in your post #20 you said you found the leak at the rack. Case closed, you need a new rack.

Thanks. Any recommended brand?

Do you want a new one, rebuilt or used?

Please UPDATE YOUR PROFILE in USER CP to include where you live.

Assuming I'll be using this vehicle for at least another five years, which of the options would you recommend for a trouble free five years.
Also any instruction for replacement will be appreciated. And can I drain the rack prior to removal.
Thank you

This is not an easy task as you will need a lift.

Thank you.
Why some steps and parts hilighted and in different colors. What is the significance of the colors.
Thanks

I highlighted those segments to make sure that readers would take note.

Update:
Rack and pinion is now rebuilt and replaced. However when I have the front wheels raised with the engine turned off and cold, steering wheel is pretty smooth except towards the end when it is still somehow not smooth, rather hard to turn the last quarter turn, especially when turning left; turning right is somewhat better.
Looking forward to your insight.
Thanks,

Are the knuckle joints ok on the steering wheel shaft?

anavabi 10-04-2018 02:53 PM

As there's no audible noise when steering lock to lock, I assume that they are ok.

Thanks,

Someone must look into the reservoir to see if there are any bubbles while you turn the steering wheel.
