Differential oil - need clarification
1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys I need to clarify which oil to use for 2011 ML350 4MATIC.
According to WIS, oil in transfer case should be 236.12 spec, rear differential should be 235.15 spec and front differential should be 235.74 spec. I thought that oil in transfer case is the same oil as in transmission - 236.15 spec, and both front and rear differentials have same oil. Can someone check WIS and confirm the specs for both differentials and transfer case? I would like to change the oil but I want to be sure I'll use the right one :) Thanks |

Here are the specific charts.

This is same chart I attached to my post. Is there any difference between 235.15 and 235.74? Both are 75W-85

Then check both sheets and compare manufacturers. https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/235.0_en.html |
Ok so I searched more and since I don't have differential lock, both front and rear differential have same oil but different specs. Front differential has spec 235.74 and rear has 235.7 but oil is the same for both specs: A0019893303
Now according to the sheet I should have to use spec 236.12 for transfer case. I know that 236.14 spec replaced old 236.12 spec for ATF but I'm not sure if that's valid for transfer case as well. It's confusing. In transmission I have 236.15 (blue ATF fluid) but for transfer case I have to use 236.12 (old red fluid)? If yes can I use newer version of red fluid 236.14? |
artim, I don't own a diesel. I won't recommend any fluid in case something goes wrong. Why can't you just use what the charts say?
Or call a dealer and give them the last 8 digits of your vin # and ask them. |
236.14 trans oil is perfectly ok to use in your transfer case.

I use the Fuchs 4134? in both - am pretty sure I looked it up on Fuchs website and that was there recommendations - in Australia had issues trying to get a good enough fluid for transmission

I know this is an old post, but I came across it just now in my search for gear oil for front and rear differentials on my 2006 ML500. On the "BB00.40-P-0231-01A" that you provided, would you please explain how to find out if on my car, I have: 1- "Rear axle with differential lock model 164" 2- "Rear axle model 164 with rear wheel drive (4 X2)" Document attached. Thanks |

Thanks Anyhow, there is a dial on your middle panel like the one on the right (picture below). See thread for discussion. 12-mark is set to AUTO 3-mark is set to transfer case lock? 6-mark is set to diff lock? If you look under the car on the differential housing, you will see the big motor as well. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...acb79f52f5.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...75adf9ba59.jpg Diff motor |
