Need help with Steering Angle Sensor recalibration procedure (2010 ML350 4Matic)
Recently had ESP error message and turned out to be bad steering angle sensor.
Bought new sensor and clock spring (thought of replacing this too given I am going to be there). Ready to install.
Read that I need to do the road test procedure to recaliber the sensor.
Does anybody have the step by step recalibtaion procedure?
Appreciate all your help
For a new steering angle sensor, you need to use Xentry and connect a laptop to the car. You need a mobile power adapter (or good battery in the laptop!) because you need to take the laptop with you while driving.
I believe it is under Initial Startup or Adaptations or something. You are basically learning the new sensor. It puts the car in a special mode ("Rig Test" appears in dash) and you need to complete the whole process without stopping.
It involved telling me to achieve a certain speed, make certain turns (ie. turn slight left, then hard right with the wheel turned all the way, then hard left, etc.. something like that). Needs to be done in a parking lot as you'll be driving in circles, and trying to maintain a certain speed (for example, you need to do everything between 20km/h and 40km/h or something like that. If you slow down or speed up it will fail and you need to start over.
When I did it, it took me about 2 hours to figure it out properly. Once I found the right menus in Xentry (see above). The actual process including preparation is done in only 10 mins when you're at the parking lot with laptop all connected.
Not easy, but not impossible either.
