I had a very similar problem with mine as well. My rubber boot that covers the hinge of the rear hatch had a cracked plastic housing that secures it to the hatch. It would allow water to get into the rear quarter panel of the vehicle. All it took was some RTV silicone and the leaking issues stopped

Stuffed paper towel up in there and it got wet.. Not as wet as the paper towel I stuffed in below the tail lights.. Its raining cats and dogs tonight and I'm out in the ml320 doing food deliveries

Thank you.. Jeeps getting the tail light gaskets done on Monday so will have a look at that as well thank you
