Lowering the W164 on steel springs.

I'm convinced my 2010 ML 350 is quite high off the ground, and the 1.8/1.5 inch drop will be effective, but is it subtle?

I searched for pics, but all of the cars had oversize wheels with wider offset, etc. This is the best looking pic I found...

What do people think? Is it cost-effective? I dont' want to spend $1000 labor for spring install. I kind of need control arms and an alignment anyway. Do those jobs overlap at all? My BOSCH mechanic is 100 miles away, I want to combine jobs and economize too. Local estimate for control arms is $1300.

Anyway, what to think? I'm sticking with stock 20"s or my custom 18" with 15mm spacers. I'm liking the vehicle, but it might be way better lowered....I just want it to look normal.

lol, I know it's a W166, it was the only pic worth saving. Searching for 164 pics wasn't very fruitful.

Now that I think about it, some of those MLs look pretty slammed. Could some of them be on bags?

What's the advertised drop on the H&R springs? I've done H&R springs with Koni Yellows on a mk4 Golf before. IIRC 1.5 inch drop. The ride was much firmer thank stock and the drop wasn't a slam. Slam to me means when you can barely fit a finger in between the wheel and fender, or the gap is less than that. I also got a raked look with the mk4. The rear did not drop as much as the front.

I did it to minimize body roll for track events, looks weren't a big reason although it turned out alright.

This one looks good.

I want it to look normal, but without 5 inches of wheel gap. One guy said his rides at 3.5" of clearance.

Anyway, I bought them. For $130 I can flip them if I don't install. Likely going to ride on the beat control arms until it's noticeable. I have 4 MB to tend to. Think I'm going to sell my CLK 500 Cabrio and my GLA 250. The lowered ML should be a good daily driver.

I lowered my W164 with the eibach lowering springs with the bilstein b-12 pro kit. Overall drop in height was around 1.5" both front and back. Not super noticeable but definitely made the tires fill out the wheel wells nicer with no huge gap above the tire and wheel well liner. Ride quality was definitely firmer than stock but by no means was it a harsh ride. I would 10/10 recommend that kit. I did not change the UCA's or any other suspension components and had zero wear issues/component failures after 140,000 miles of driving on less than ideal wisconsin roads.

So if you have a 5" inch gap right now, you truly believe that a 1.5" inch drop in the rear will make a noticeable difference?

I do not believe you have a 4Matic, please correct me if I am wrong. Mine is 4Matic, I like the extra ground clearance and would never think about dropping it, as it defeats the purpose of going through snow banks or any other terrain other than a road.

I have a tough uphill driveway, but even my GLA can make it with 8" clearance on P7 all-seasons in nearly 2ft
