Water pump oil port

Was replacing the water pump this weekend and was surprised to see this oil port on the left side - just sort of makes a pass through the housing - I guess to cool off a little. Was wondering if that is accurate, or if there is some other function? The oil was a little funky compared to the recently replaced oil that I’m seeing on the dipstick.

Before you removed the pump did you look at the color in the coolant reservoir? What color was it?

When you removed the pump, what was the color of the coolant?

All good blue coolant. Just had recently replaced it a few weeks ago before the water pump started acting up. You can see a small amount still in the port on the lower right.

What ML are we dealing with, the 550 or the 350? If it's the 350 is it Gas eng. or CDI?

Your 550 is a 272 eng. with a turbo, right?

Have you replaced the water pump?

How many hoses did you remove to replace the pump PHOTOS please?

Just the lower hose. See pic. Upper hose connects to the thermostat.

I asked two simple questions and you only answered one. Have you replaced the water pump?

Sorry, missed that first question. Yes, was installing a new water pump - see original post.
