Best Sealer for Fuel Filter/Pump Covers? 06 ML500
I have come to replacing the fuel filter and the fuel pump by a circuitous route, trying to understand a continually blown fuel pump fuse. If you are interested, you can read the thread:
Sorry Saga Of Me Learning NOT to continually replace blown fuses
I managed to get the fuel pump replaced, and it works. I am wondering what is the best material fo sealing the lid back on. Obviously my main concern is any gas smell in the car. However, I've been checking the car carefully since I did the job and it is free of any gas smell when I sniff around the seal. (BTW, I couldn't get the locking ring off, even with a specialist tool. It just broke the tabs. So I had to chisel it off. I then bought the ring, gasket and lock part. I already purchased this for the fuel pump side!)
Obviously someone has done this job before.

I wouldn't get crazy getting some special sealer. Fuel resistant RTV or permatex gasket sealer will do. Interesting to see that someone has been in there before. Did they use MB parts? How many miles on your vehicle?

If you did the pump replacement with brand new fuel pump housing gaskets, I wouldn't worry so much about the cover. IF you start smelling gas in the car through BOTH the housing gasket and cover you have bigger problems I think... For comparison the w211's just had round foams for the covers.
