What's everyone's opinion on wheel insurance?

If I was ordering my gle 450 with 22's, I think I'd get it. I'm in the DC area and roads are bad, but the tire seems pretty beefy on the amg 21s. I think it's $1700, which doesn't seem worth it to me.

I have it on all my MB's and it pays for itself each time. Had two wheels and tires replaced recently after running over something that fell off a truck in front of me. My ML550 is on 20" AMG wheels.

Make sure you buy the MB policy and the dealer isn't selling an aftermarket company's version. I got the 5 year policy for $950 I think. It will cover summer and winter set BTW.

A gaggle of MB's
Frankly - a sidewall flat is now more common that a "flat tread" flat - and sidewall flat requires tire replacement ... if the dealer is not out to r*pe you - wheel and tire can prevent future painful headaches - hazard insurance from tire manufacturers on replacement tires is worthless to try to claim - and tire manufacturers do NOT offer hazard insurance on new-vehicle/new-tires.

Keep the beat !

I never buy extra things besides main extended warranty, waste of money for me because I don't go off road on my ML and I try to drive carrifully and check my tires pressure.

Having lived in DC through nasty winters, the potholes that can develop on high speed roads (95-495-395 / BW Parkway etc) can be straight edged and deep and will bend a 20" AMG wheel. They will bend most wheels. VA might reimburse you if the pothole was reported and not repaired.

Refurbishing a bent wheel (if it isn't cracked) with a send-away service can run $220-280 per wheel, which doesn't include mount/balance. But they will also take care of the curb rash. I may have parallel parked by feel a time or two.

Some will quote as low as $80, but they operate out of a truck and typically don't handle bigger bends - mostly curb rash. MB Alexandria and Arlington both used a truck service to try and repair wheels.

I had 4 bent wheels over a 2-year period there. It was bad enough that I just gave up and bought a smaller winter set. After leaving the DC area, not a single problem.

I don't take my ML or AMG off-road and keep tires at proper pressure. The roads are as much a problem, with potholes and debris or thrown objects possible anywhere.

Insurance is insurance. It is always a bad deal... unless you need it.

If the provider is making money on it, that means the average customer is losing money on it.

Nonetheless, I buy a lot of insurance every year.

Thank you all for the responses. I didn't end up getting the wheel insurance.

It's a must have here with all the rail construction let alone our poorly maintained roads to begin with. One AMG wheel is $1,425 - and I doubt the City and County will even get close to paying that out so I opted for the coverage on both vehicles. GL!

It is a money maker for the financial person who completes your sale. Unless you hit curbs often it is not a good deal for most.
