ML350 won't shift gear after service reset
My brother just did an oil change on his 2013 ML350 and reset the service maintenance. He didn't drive the car after that, but when he started it up today and try to drive and the gear won't shift. Any advise? does he need to reset the transmission somehow?
thanks.
thanks.

You need to scan the truck for codes first

Update: He just solved the problem. In case someone runs in to this issue. Basically, he removed the push start button from the ignition and start the car with smartkey and everything is back to normal.

I’ve spoken too soon. It was only temporary. When he park the car overnight, and it won’t shift again when start engine with the push start button. It will still work if he use the smart key instead.

you need a pro level scanner, such as the Autel for this truck, not the ****ty OBDII scanner Bobby Joe will have at AutoZone. If you're going to be doing work on this car yourself, invest in one, or pay thru the roof for the MB diagnostic fee at the dealer, or find a good indie.

If I had to bet, and didn't have access to a scanner, I'd say it's time for a new battery. Weak batteries seem to exhibit this symptom on these trucks.

You are likely drawing the wrong conclusion that an intermittent malfunction of some description with the TCU or some valve or solenoid is related to the method with which you started the vehicle... chances are that the second time it worked because of the restart, not because it was started with a key instead of the button -- although it does actually make a difference (you can only shut down the car in neutral with the key for example, not with the button). What are the transmission error codes? As we47b1me said, you need to invest in a mux and laptop with DAS Xentry or another pro-grade scanner (like an Autel MaxiDAS) if you're planning on servicing the car yourself.
