Roof rack cross bars
Gonna take a look at these. Reviews are good. I have a '14 ML and '14 GL so I can swap between the cars if they fit. Will report back.

I'm gonna take the GL. If they don't have an open box of them, I'm gonna buy them, go out in the parking lot and open the box and try them. If they work, I drive home. if they don't, I go back inside and return them.

I bought an identical rack off of eBay last year ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/CargoLoc-2-Piece-52-Aluminum-Roof-Top-Cross-Bar-Set-Fits-Maximum-46-Gap-B-/223346169061 ) for about the same price. It fit well, was easy to adjust, good value. I used it with a soft cargo carrier which I tied down with the new cross bars and existing side rails; the carrier sat on the roof. I say this to clarify that for my purpose it did not carry much weight, so I can't say how well it would work for those situations.
