Turbo Blanket ? Who uses one?
Wondering if anyone is running a turbo blanket(S) on their v12 TT?

Not me - I wouldn't want to risk cracking the turbos, but I am going to put a heat shield between the turbo and the charge air pipe from the compressor to the intercooler.

So is that a documented issue specific to M275s, I actually asked PTP about issues and they stated they have not had an issue since the inception of their business(Not specific to SL600).....

I am not trying to persuade you in any way, simply providing my real world experience with blankets.
I have not had the chance to do the SL. However, I've always tried to add blankets to my turbocharged applications when I could. I have operated several different types of vehicles with blankets, some vehicles in excess of 10 years and 200,000 miles without any negative side effects. In my experience, I have always gained better throttle response, lower under-hood temps, and in some cases, lower EGTs. IMO, the only drawback to blankets on a high-use vehicle is the blanket breaks down after about 60,000 miles. Recently, in search of a longer lasting blanket, I have switched to DEI's Titanium blankets on two vehicles. So far, they have 25k miles without any issues. best of luck, -PM |

Sorry, forgot to attach this. Attached is a good engineering expriment performed by UT Austin. The results mimic my real-world experience. Most notably, the tip-in throttle response changes.

Yeah, I read that paper earlier today. Interesting (though the EGT was slightly increased). I'm not aware of anyone using them on the V12, nor of any problems, but when I investigated thermal blankets a few years ago (for various reasons, not just turbos) I came across some instances where people had cracked turbine castings through over-heating. The V12TT engine compartment is definitely too hot, but my inclination would have been to use metal shields instead of blankets.
More power and quicker response are always worth having, but I'd like to hear about more real-world experience. Do the serious tuners like Alpha use turbo blankets? Do Borg Warner and the like recommend for or against using them? Any ideas? Nick |

However, during a consistent pull up a grade for several miles, the EGTs are slightly lower overall with a turbo blanket. As mentioned before, the most significant gain is tip-in response. your concerns on cracking I have never experienced. I have had seven vehicles over the years with blankets: 3 cars, 2 light duty diesel trucks, 2 heavy duty 15 liter semis; no problems ever. The semis just wear out the blankets from mileage every couple years. Nor do I know if tuners use them. Using a blanket is a driveability improvement; not something that can be measured really on a chassis dyno. Short of an experiment, you really need to be in tune with your vehicle on many different driving scenarios to feel the difference of a turbo blanket. Further, when tuners are working on cars there's usually too many significant changes being made at one point in time to document a result from something, in comparison, so insignificant as a blanket. Last, my experience with most tuning shops is they want to get numbers on a piece of paper to sell more parts. None of them have really ever cared about drivablility. This is probably the main reason why I still toy with this stuff.... As far as borg warner and turbo manufactures concern on blankets, I believe it's a cost saving measure. you definitely see blankets being applied by F1... I think the science is there. Why we don't see it, I believe is non-scientific reason. |
I have 2 options, going to use either the Subaru or the T25/T28 blankets, they advised they had no direct fit for SL600 but these would work. Also getting one for my CLA45

I wrapped the downpipe of my CLA45 it runs 550-750 C and within 20 minutes you can touch the pipe wrap surface

I noticed you are in Chicago too....what burb? There are some companies out there that will make you a custom blanket (not sure what your budget is..). Custom blankets are usually double the price. However, I know this turbo is very similar to a version used by Porsche. Maybe you can do some digging and find out what those guys are using... I live in the city for now... |

You'd benefit more from a hat style blanket. |

I went with the Subaru, its flat but has more surface area...the T25-T28 don't cover all the way around and he didn't think the 996 would work......I think I can draw the sides down around the turbo. Picked one up for my CLA45 AMD also......just got done putting new hoses on my 90 ZR-1....so keeping busy, lol

Well pulled everything off....there is no way to wrap the turbo.....there is no clearance on the bottom or on the side...I could barely clear a piece of corrugated cardboard in the gaps

Not giving up yet....might try another blanket.....the WRX had large pegs on the center which will not let it a coolant line

Just to resurrect an old thread here. I bought a blanket for a different car with a turbo that the supplier did not seemingly cater for, but they were very very helpful. In my case, I was trying to cover a Holset and the supplier went to the trouble of looking up the dimensions and advising me which blanket to use from their options. Needless to say, it fits well.
Funk Motorsport Turbo Blankets or Turbo Jackets - UK BASED They have a few options including universal and some specific fit, but might be worth dropping them a line. I was impressed with the quality of the unit I bought. I also got some of their titanium/CF heat wrap, which there was tons of!
