Selling my 1998 Mercedes SL500 with Panoramic Hardtop. It has the SL2 package which includes heated seats and most importantly, self-leveling xenon headlights. This car was a Florida car for the majority of its life, accumulating only 52,900 original miles in the last 26 years. I purchased the car as an enthusiast of the R129 with plans to fix it.
During my ownership I replaced the notorious top hydraulic cylinders with cylinders rebuilt by Top Hydraulics in Oregon. It does still need various fixes that require tinkering I just don’t have the time for. The top cylinders were replaced but the top stops at in the middle of its cycle which is indicative of a bad sensor I have not yet discovered. The windows do not want to roll up as a result, though you can “trick” them into going up. The engine mounts are also in need of replacement, new mounts will be included with the sale.
The oil was changed a year ago and the tires were replaced with brand new Goodyear assurance which have about 200 miles on them. The drivetrain is in excellent condition, it runs very smoothly and the transmission is flawless.
Cosmetically the car is great for its age with a few items needing attention. The passenger seat leather is torn. The soft top has minor cracking in the plastic windows and the hard top has some scuffs on the glass. The paint is incredibly sharp, even compared to new vehicles of its class.
Overall this SL will require the patience and know-how of an enthusiast but offers a great value as it’s mileage and panoramic hardtop place it in the $15,000-$20,000 range when repairs are completed.
