Description:
This is the second G55 I’ve owned. Years ago I purchased a nearly identical new 2005 G55, and despite owning many enthusiast cars in the years since, the G-Class always remained my dream vehicle. When the opportunity came up in the summer of 2020 to purchase this truck from its original owner, I immediately jumped at the chance.
The original owner used the truck primarily for long-distance commuting between Palm Springs, California and Las Vegas, Nevada, which helped preserve the vehicle exceptionally well for its age. The dry western climate is a major reason this truck presents so cleanly today.
What makes these trucks special, in my opinion, is the drivetrain. This generation uses the legendary hand-built AMG M113K supercharged V8, which many enthusiasts consider one of the greatest AMG engines Mercedes ever produced. I personally prefer it over the later G63 variants. The combination of the supercharged V8, old-school hydraulic steering, vault-like construction, and upright driving position creates an experience that feels completely different from modern SUVs.
This truck has been maintained with an open checkbook during my ownership. It has been serviced primarily through Mercedes-Benz of Devon, PA, with no corners cut on maintenance or repairs. I have addressed items as they came up, including suspension work, shocks, springs, brakes, rotors, and other maintenance items needed over time.
Recently, I noticed shifting characteristics that felt firmer than I personally preferred. Out of an abundance of caution, I replaced the entire valve body assembly, conductor plate, and transmission connector components using OEM Mercedes parts sourced directly through Mercedes-Benz of Devon. Following the work, the transmission continues to exhibit firmer shifting characteristics than I would ideally like, particularly compared to modern vehicles, but after inspection and discussion with a Mercedes technician I was advised that the behavior appears consistent with the characteristics of this transmission and model year. I prefer to disclose this openly so prospective buyers have complete transparency.
Overall, the truck has been remarkably reliable and largely trouble-free during my ownership.
Included with the sale:
• Clean title in hand
• Original window sticker
• Extensive service documentation
• Original owner records
• All books and manuals
• Original DVD/media materials
• Factory accessories
I even went as far as sourcing the original Yokohama tires that these trucks came with from the factory, despite significantly higher cost versus modern alternatives, simply to preserve originality and period correctness.
Condition-wise, the truck is extremely honest and presents beautifully for a nearly 20-year-old vehicle. The interior is exceptionally clean with very little wear. The only notable interior blemishes are two small cracks in the wood veneer around the shifter area, which is common on these trucks.
Externally, the truck shows very well overall, but it is important to be realistic: this is still a 20-year-old G-Wagen shaped like a rolling brick. As expected, there are rock chips on the front bumper and windshield surround from highway driving over the years. I prefer to describe the truck honestly rather than oversell it.
The truck currently has approximately 194,000 miles. I purchased it with approximately 167,000 miles and averaged less than 5,000 miles per year during my ownership.
I am an active member of the G-Wagen community, including G-Wagen forums, MBWorld, and the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. I’ve owned many Mercedes chassis over the years including W126s, W140s, and several AMG models, but the G55 has always been the one vehicle that felt special every single time I drove it.
If you know these trucks, you understand what they are. This is not a heavily modified or neglected example. It is a well-preserved, enthusiast-owned, highly documented G55 that has been cared for properly and enjoyed respectfully.
Clean title in hand. Serious inquiries are welcome and I am happy to answer questions or provide additional photos, documentation, and service history.
