I have a 1989 300CE with M103 983 engine, 300,000km. As the car was imported prior to the availability of unleaded fuel in South Africa the car is not fitted with a catalytic converter. When cold everything works OK but at 80 degrees + acceleration and running are awful. On removing the air-filter the circular plate is not working well. It depresses a bit but increasing the revs it comes to a stop. A slight tap on the plate and it depresses and everything works fine.

he fuel pressure is fine across all engine speeds. I replaced the 4 pin temp sensor and the crankshaft sensor. OVP, re-soldered the connections and cleaned the terminals. This is working fine (the ABS warning light no longer shows for no reason - a useful sign that the OVP has a problem).

So now I just have to work out how to get that plate to depress correctly. Any thoughts?

Hi megawatt man - I am also in Australia in Brisbane and have an 89 300CE with an issue, and wanted to know your opinion. The car runs ok if used daily, but if it is left to sit for about 2 days or more, it is very erratic in accelleration and when you put your foot down to go it shudders like hell and hardly goes forward. If I then run it on the motorway for about 20 minutes it seems to clear itself up. it also seems to respond better if I put throttle body cleaner down it first (after sitting for a couple of days or more). I have changed ovp, injectors, coolant temp sensor but it has made some difference but not 100% (about 50%). If used daily there seems to be no issue - it runs ok. What is your opinion please. Thanks
