I've had both happen. If you have your iTunes music closed. It will open the app and start playing from the 1st track in your library.
If you are playing music over Bluetooth and connect it; it will continue playing on that track.
Also, you may want to simply reboot your phone. That sometimes does the trick as well.

It doesn't do this on a 2015 E Class, basically same system. I wonder if it's something the service guys can disable (like turn off auto play when connected). Drives me nuts.

well i play most of my music off mixcloud & soundcloud.
If I have mixcloud playing something and then plug in it will play off of mixcloud w/o me fussing around.
However, if I plug in my phone first w/o anything playing it will default to the first track on itunes.
Now, my girl hates the first track on my itunes. So she is getting really frustrated with hearing a 3 sec, 5 sec clip lol. I need a solution that does not involve deleting the first track.

Since I stream all my music and nothing local, what I did was delete all tracks, then added a 3 second silent track to my library. Problem was solved for me.
Might not work for you since you play local music as well.
