Colin McRae vs. Michael Schumacher

From F1-Live.com:

McRae calls for Schumacher duel
After winning the Safari Rally [15/07/02 - 00:02]

Reigning world champion Michael Schumacher isn't the only racing driver entering the record books this year with Rally driver Colin McRae recording the most number of rally wins in the Kenyan Safari Rally on Sunday. After taking victory, McRae then promptly called for a head-to-head shootout with his Formula One counterpart.

After notching up a world record 25th victory the Scot told the BBC he wanted to take on the four time Formula One champion in a match, which would comprise of a race in a Formula One car and then another in a Rally vehicle - with the proceeds going to charity.

Michael has yet to respond to the challenge.

It's funny you should mention a WRC driver.

Of all the motorsports out there, I have the most respect for F1 and WRC drivers......I really enjoy watching these on Speed

Can you imaging McRae doing power slides on every corner in the Ferrari F2002 and Schumacher bundled up on an ice rally or getting all dusty on the Safari Rally?

Ha! At least (in the case of Schumacher), we could get close enough to him for a photo and autograph if he was a rally driver:p

I think McRae would be a lot better at Formula 1, than Schuey would be at Rally driving.

Not sure.....

But, I would definitely have to watch it!

I have only been to one F1 race so far (Montreal '02), so my experience is limited.

Next year, the goal is to attend two in Europe. But, I hadn't thought about attending a WRC race...mmmmmmmm

I sincerely hope it's not true.

I went to Tennesse for the first time recently - it was actually pretty nice there. The series that morphed into the WRC used to have a rally in New England (New Hampshire or Vermont); although, like F1 until recently, hasn't been to the US for years. It's hard to say where the best place in the US for a rally would be - although I think someplace mountainous with good access (major airports nearby) is a must. This makes places like Tennessee, Colorado and the Pacific Northwest good candidates.

Cheers, BT

Funny thing, Montreal '02 has been my only live-experience, too! Very nice to finally see the cars in person, though the general admission tickets were a patently bad idea.

As for WRC, when I watch that thing on TV, I've got to wonder who's braver -- the fans or the drivers!

I plan on the gold ticket next year. I never thought the cars would be THAT loud ... I was watching at the fence right before the hairpin corner, where the drivers were still at full throttle. The engine noise was such that it felt like my ears were being ripped out of my head.

TV also never shows how truly fast these cars run. I've got a female friend who claims race car drivers aren't athletes and there's nothing special about 'em. I'm gonna take her to Montreal next year just to prove her wrong.

I went with two friends and booked through gptours.com......I recommend them highly.

My 'ultimate' goal is to attend them all in the next 10 years or so

Tell your gf the drivers are definitely athletes...the serious G's that these guys endure. Can't remember the source, but I seem to recall that Schumacher loses 4 lbs. during each race....and he's already very thin!

mmmmmmm....good diet plan....high speed runs at the Nurburgring

Actually, I went go-karting at SpeedRing in the Bay Area. After two 12-minute runs, I was drenched in sweat and exhausted. But what a thrill! I can imagine those F1 guys being dead tired afterwards, but they must be in incredible shape to be smiling and jumping around on that podium.

The first time I went to Montreal in 1991, general admission was actually pretty good. Even though I had seats, I walked around most of the track during practice and qualifying and had very good viewing. Too bad they figured out that if they make the general admission crappy viewing that it forces people to buy the much more expensive seats. The gold grandstands at Montreal are OK, but I think the silver seats in the Senna Ss probably give a more interesting view of the cars on track as they sweep through the corners. The golds do give a good view of the pit action - but the cars just kind of blast by during the race. Depends on what you want to see, I guess.

I'll second this recommendation, I've used these guys as well - great tours!

I think that's exactly what they did -- they put up black coverings on the fences where you could actually get a good view. You literally had to look through little nooks and crannies to see the cars. I still had a great time, but it took some hunting to find a semi-decent spot.

But I also cam eup with another reason for those covered-up areas: when you watch the broadcast on TV, you don't see any of the general admission clutter, just the grandstands and the cars. Screw the general admissions guys for the TV viewers!

prior to about 1980, youused to be able to sit on the mound at the end of the hairpin. you could see the cars come through the chicane drop 5 or 6 gears into the corner and then wind out down the front straights. and the noise was awesome.

of course thinking back on it now, it was a pretty stupid place to be sitting if anything ever went wrong... just wish I'd had my camera then.

the very best way to be close at a race in to be a corner worker.
