2000 E320, unrefined/clattery engine under acceleration
our '00 E320 has developed a clattery noise under acceleration, along with a loose knocking/rattling sound from underneath the car at idle that appears intermittently.the sound under acceleration sounds like it's coming from the middle air conditioning vents, but I turned the air off and the sound is still there. it's hard to describe the sound though, almost like a air whisting sound but with more clatter . if the windows are open, the sound is clearly audible and is most audible from about 2000 to 3000 rpms. the car never sounded like this before, it used to be perfectly smooth but now is so rough and unrefined sounding it's embarassing.
the other problem, the rattling, comes from the center of the underside of the car. i looked under the car when it was rattling but nothing appears to be loose or shaking that I can see. the rattle is intermittent and isn't dependent on engine temp. I don't think it's the cats, which we be the most obvious, because we took the car in about a month ago because it developed a horrible vibration, and the service advisor said it was most likely the cats but it turned out to be worn engine mounts. the cats could have gone bad in that months time though.
any info is appreciated...

Time to take your car back to the dealer.
Delaying it won't make the outcome cost any less.

Sounds like its what I had with the 01 I recently traded for a W211. Cats have failed. Its common on the 210 and not a big deal but very annoying till they are replaced. May even be covered under the emmissions warranty.

The other noise is the cats also, loose internal baffles. Mine, from your description acted, sounded the same way. Try to get them to change both sides.
