Old Smartkey compatible with new one?

I am in the market for a 2000 - 2002 CLK320/430, and I have a couple of questions.

My '02 S500 features the newer style smartkey (I guess they started using them after '00 year) It's the smaller key with the metal emblem.

I notice that all '00 and older models use the bigger, doofier looking key.

My question is, could I program the newer style key to the old one at the dealer if I were to get a 2000 CLK?

I can buy a used Smartkey on eBay, it's not really that important that the accessory key has already been cut, I just want the sleeker key.

So is it possible? Will it fit in the slot?

Don't waste your time or money it won't work. Know of no one who has bought a smart key from E Bay that can be reprogrammed.

Weird answer.

What if I reprogram one of my 4 2002 S-Class keys?

Smartkeys CANNOT be reprogrammed by anyone. The key comes factory programmed to the VIN of the vehicle. Your local MB dealer can't even send them back to MB to do it. I'm not sure but I believe if you order a new key you will get the newer style! Call your local parts dept-they will be able to verify this.

Nice. Thanks for telling me that info. Now I know that all those auctions are phony and people just waste $30.00 every time they buy one.

I heard it's around $130 from MB. I would rather buy a new one.

Are they actually the same size? Does any one have 2 to compare?

All of your questions might be answered if you search the forum. I think this has been covered quite a few times. There are responses about the reprogramming, the size comparison, and what you can get from the dealership. I don't remember it all but if you check you'll find it.
