Benifits of synthetic oil and regular servicing
W201 190D 2.5 Diesel
133,000mi, all services done at 6000mi intervals as per MB
Has used Mobil 1 since new, have used 0w-40 since 70,000mi
Nice hone marks, no sludge, no varnish
The camshaft was just sprayed with prepsol to remove the black oil, but that's it, nothing was wiped.
I'm not here to push Mobil 1, any high quality syn oil IN CONJUCTION with APPROPREATE service intervals for the type of use should result in a very clean engine.
Oil is cheap, engines aren't

I also agree with you guys as well. A prime benefit also, in respect to a clean engine and limited wear, is in extreme conditions such as myself. I live in northern British Columbia, Canada, and as of right now, it is a balmy -25C (-6F) and because our Ml320 is on the road a lot, it is always nice to know the oil won't be corn syrup on a cold morning start, especially if the block heater can't be used or garaged overnight.
As Ausmbtech says, "oil is cheap" and I have followed that thought for years. I run synthetic in everything, from my lawnmower to snowblower to snowmobiles and cars. When people say it's expensive, think about this :the price you paid for gasoline in August...... but you still bought it, right? And now, it's cheap, and the money you save today on just one fill-up will pay the difference in running synthetic for several months at least. That's pretty cheap insurance at the minimum of costs and savings.
I have honestly seen oil filters blow off engines in very cold conditions because of thick standard oil on startup....yet to know either from cold or hot climates, synthetic oil can make save your bacon in many situations in the long run.
