Fuel level gauge always TOO low

The fuel level indicator in the instrument cluster always shows 2 gls. too low.

It is compounded/caused perhaps that the gas pump shuts off prematurely.

I had same problem with my SL, but it had a much larger tank.

Preferring not to have sensor replaced under the warranty, -

because I do not trust the MB mechanics - (they cause more collateral damage most of the time), -

what is the possible cause for not being able to get a FULL tank of gas?

:o

You ARE getting a full tank of gas, the sensor is just not reading it right, hence the inaccurate gauge. It won't cause any harm if you can live with it, but replacing the sensors is not that difficult, even an amateur MB technician can do it.

most of the time, it's either the fuel sensors or the fuel sending unit itself. We've had the one on our ML replaced once because it always read 85% full when we just filled up the tank.

after replacing it, always reports full now

Great - many thanks for your responses/help.

I shall talk to my MB service advisor and see if he can shake loose a more "senior" MB technician to rectify problem, - and replace defective parts.

01' CLK 320
I experienced your problem when I filled up my 01 CLK 320 today. The fuel gauge showed 1/4 full (the computer displayed 15 L), so I went to gas station. I expected I could put in 45 L, but the gas pump stopped at 30 L. I didn't try to put in more coz in the past, when I tried to top up, it overflowed!!! So, I went back to my car and when I started it, the fuel gauge was only 3/4 full and the computer showed 45 L. I am not sure if the fuel sensor is down again because at 6000 Km, I replaced the fuel sensor caused by bad gas (Shell). I switched to Esso at 12000 Km and now the car has only 15000 Km, am I experiencing bad sensor again?

most likely it's either the sensor or the sending unit itself.

If it's an ML they have a long history of problems. I had a 500 where you could only put in 18 gallon when it supposed to have a 20 something gallon tank

I had a C-class do it all the time, and now an E that does it half the time. I've just leaned to live with it and monitor the trip Odo.
