Ignition Key Won't Turn in 2000 E320

Hey Everybody,
I have a 2000 E320 and after the car battery was re-charged, the key opens doors but won't turn in ignition. The steering is not locked and the dash shows "remove key" while beeping when the door is open - Even when the key is removed. I appreciate any assistance with this.

Disconnect\reconnect the battery---what happens with the key

FOB could be junk also.

Recharged battery? Is it possible the vehicle battery failed either before, or during, the recharge?

An inexpensive next step is to replace the fob battery.

Then try replacing the vehicle battery.
