I am familiar with how BMW/laptop diag works, however am trying to learn about star.

I can get my hands on the software, can I use a windows laptop and an OBD to USB cable?

OR, what else will I need to get to use a star diag on a 2003 SL (R230)?

Depending upon DAS Xentry or XDOS version you purchase you will need either an XP or WIN 7 32bit laptop---then you will need a C3 or C4 mux and cables to diagnose vehicles
