Is My 48volt Charging System Working?
 
The "Charge%" in my CLS53 "VEHICLE-CONSUMPTION" Multimedia screen seems to be displaying the amount of charge being APPLIED TO the batteries rather than the amount of charge ON the batteries. This seems really strange. Please see my post at the following link to see the actual displays which appeared on and after an extended trip. Thank you for any help or clarification on this.

Could someone else on this forum please check their display and charge level? This either needs clarification by Mercedes on what this display indicates or there is a problem that needs to be resolved.

It doesn't show the "state of charge" of the battery as it is never intended to be charged to 100%. If it was 100% charged then it couldn't be used to regenerate under brakes and the life of the batteries would be shorter. most 48v systems try and keep the state of charge between 25-75%.

Yes, I agree. Charge should be between those levels, not near 100% for various reason: to allow for charging during braking and to extend the life. But why, after an extended drive would this display show 5-10%. Why not work around 50 - 60% so that when I enter into traffic or start my next trip the next day, the battery is ready to provide the level of torque that is supposed to make this mild-hybrid effective?

Perhaps this is the situation and the COMMAND display is misleading or perhaps the software that controls the charging during cruising needs to be modified. I know that is presumptuous and I expect there is a good reason that the 5-10% charge level is displayed and maintained, but it would be very helpful if someone from Mercedes could provide a good explanation. I have started a thread on this subject on the AMG Private Lounge that has provided some insight but no good answers. Here is that link:

I finally received info from the MBUSA monitor, Brian Cotter on the AMG Private Lounge blog which clarified the display. He stated:

Okay, I just spoke with someone on the US technical team and they informed me that the chart you are seeing for "Charge" is not the current state of charge, but the amount of charging that occurred during a 5-minute block of time. I think you can change the scale of this chart to display 1-minute chunks, too, but I am not positive about that.

If you are on the highway, the charge level will be relatively low since the battery will be at a high state of charge. When driving in a city environment, the charge meter will show more charging taking place due to the starter/generator and ebooster being utilized during acceleration, etc. As the energy is used, there is a demand for charge and charging of the 48V battery takes place.
