Purge Control Valve on 2000 E55

I have an error code stating that the Purge Control Valve is bad. It's intermittent, but it's causing occasional misfires and the car won't accelerate like it should. The Benz dealer won't explain anything, they just want my money. Too bad they are located 45 minutes from my house.

From what I understand, the "Purge Control Valve" has something to do with fuel delivery or emissions? If the purge valves are what I think they are, there are 2 of them located at the top of the block connected via a vacuum hose. They look kind of like blow off valves/diverter valves.

Am I on the right track? The main reason I want to know is so that I can either replace or repair them. If I know what the part is I may actually be able to order it.

Thanks for any help!

You have described the air injection valves, not the purge valves. The purge valve is on the drivers side fender, in front. The only misfires I have ever seen caused by a purge valve were due to the charcoal canister being full of fuel. When the purge valve opened, the engine sucked in raw fuel and quit. This doesn't sound like your problem, and if it was, replacing the purge valve won't fix it.
I would lean more towards an air mass sensor causing what you described.

I took it to a Benz mechanic here in town and he said that the purge (regeneration) valve is part of the fuel system and it's throwing codes.

Turns out that a lot of stuff was wrong with the car. The previous owner did NO maintenance to the car. So I had to do 5 years of maintenance in 1 month. He showed me all the worn out parts before he replaced them. All the parts he put in where 1/2 list price. I'm so happy I have a compassionate mechanic...

I take it you didnt have a mechanic inspect the car before you bought it?
