FS: 1988 Mercedes Benz 300GD G Wagen - Turbo Diesel
Here is a rare chance to own what is arguably the best 4x4 ever made; the Mercedes Benz Gelandewagen, or G Wagen. Designed by Mercedes Benz and hand-built in Graz, Austria by Styer-Daimler-Puch, the G-Class is used by militaries and NGO's all over the world, and is renowned by off-road enthusiasts for its 4wd capabilities, load capacity, and incredible strength and reliability.
Then there is my G Wagen; easily one of the most off road capable G Wagens in the US. Originally fitted with an inline-6 gas engine, it now has the legendary OM617 5-cylinder turbo diesel running a huge Holset HX30 and 6.5mm injector pump elements. With the current setup it produces plenty of power, but the potential is there for quite a bit more. The crisp 4 speed automatic transmission shifts well, with a manually selectable granny 1st that gives an excellent crawl ratio for tackling big obstacles. The divorced transfer case is fully synchronized, meaning that the switch from high to low range can be accomplished on the fly, a feature unique to the G Class. Both front and rear axles have factory hydraulic diff locks in excellent working order.
Tires are 37/12.5R16 Super Swampers on custom steel rims. The vehicle has a 2 inch spring lift and a 2 inch body lift, and will just tuck the tires at full articulation with no rubbing. The diffs have been changed to 6.17:1 ratio so that the big tires don't sacrifice low gearing. The braking system has been upgraded with a hydro boost system, and provides good stopping power.
The interior is in good shape; save for some light wear starting to show on the drivers seat all of the upholstery presents well. This particular example has the rare wood dash. All of the instruments work as they should, save for the odometer (a common problem). Extra gauges have been added to monitor the engine, including boost, oil pressure, a pyrometer, and AFR.
Cosmetically this rig could use some help. The paint is tired and scratched, and there is some rust starting in the normal places. That said, there is no rust-through, and some preventative measures and a fresh coat of paint would do wonders. The windshield has a crack and several rock chips, and there is a small leak in the windshield seal.
This G-Wagen is loaded with off-road equipment. The custom front bumper holds a 9500lb winch and has two bomb-proof recovery points. A $1500 Oasis air compressor with tank resides in the cargo area, along with a drawer system, cargo net, and cargo barrier. Under the dash is a power inverter for 110 volt accessories, and a battery controller sends power to the rear-mounted second battery.
Mechanically this big Benz is in excellent condition. Some recent maintenance items include:
-New glow plugs
-Fresh fuel filters (Mann and Bosch)
-Rebuilt and balanced injectors with new Monark nozzles
-New main battery
-New rear driveshaft
-Resealed fuel tank
-Valve adjustment
According to the previous owner the engine was fully rebuilt before it was installed, the axles were gone through, and the front and center driveshafts were both replaced.
Asking for $11,100 shipped.
Thanks
