Dash leather peeling / separating, anyone had this issue?
I'm looking at a couple possibilities for purchase of ML63 2012-2015. One of them I really like, but the only issue I see is peeling / separation of the leather from the dash top, mainly passenger side. Carfax is clean, but also shows nearly 0 maintenance, only a couple little things in the past year / owner and nothing before (now at 98k Miles). This is very odd for a Mercedes. Typically there are at least a few 10K dealer services on record with Carfax. No accidents or title issues. I had a local indy shop do a mechanical PPI for me, but I'm not local to the car. They say everything looks good except the brakes, which I can do myself. A new dash top can be ordered, but it's $2200 and the price is already pretty low, so the dealer doesn't want to negotiate at all. Just wondering if this is common at all for these leather dashes. My second option is to take out the dash top and see if a local upolstery shop can re-glue it, or 3rd option is to find a used one, but I haven't seen a real leather one on Ebay so far.
I've seen this scenario in other cars, including my current 2011 Cayenne S which had the leather dash replaced under warranty in the service history that I was given.

Yes, as you have experienced with another vehicle, leather dash covers can shrink over time and separate from the substrate. The vehicles you are looking at are as old as 10 years. Everything on the vehicle is well on the way to end of useful life.

Lol, a 10yr old car with lower than average miles should not be near the end of its useful life.
I understand the physics, just looking to see if anyone has actually experienced in this particular vehicle.

I have the leather dash separation issue on my ML. Happened just after warranty expired. Arghhh!! Went to 2 local upholstery shops and both said it can't be repaired, only replaced with a new dash panel.

That's not nearly as bad as the one I'm looking at. Basically the whole right side is loose. I thought maybe if I took the panel out a shop could peel it all back and re-glue it. Maybe I'll just have to suck it up and consider the $2200 replacement (and my labor) part of the cost if I want this one. It has everything I want except the multicontour seats, even has B&O sound system and alcantara headliner.

Yes my 2014 ML63 have the same leather separating in the exact same spot. Brown interior. Since discovering it, I got the windshield tinted at lowest shade, common here in Florida, should provide UV protection.

An old ML with M157 (cylinder scoring risk) with a $2,200 dash defect wouldn't attract me as a buyer. Does an M177-engined car (E63, C63) work for you, or do you need the SUV body style/size?

I have actually located a matching dash on Ebay for around $500 shipped, which is far more reasonable. But today another 2015 I have been trying to contact dropped the price, and I'd rather have that one, but the dealer in DC area is not very communicative. All I want is some high quality pics or a walk-around video. The pics posted online are small, and the car is dirty to the extent that I can't tell if the wheels are dirty, or in bad condition.

This car has literally no Carfax history between original purchase in 2012 and 2nd owner in 11/2018 . Sold in CA and then pops up in NC. Maybe it left the country? 0 service records of any kind until late 2021. Mechanic says it looks good. Would I be crazy to buy it at only $31K

I've owned 2 M278 cars and they're fantastic engines. I'm looking forward to a stroked out version. No issues, smooth as silk. Bore score is rare, it's also a scare topic for Cayenne which I also own. It seems to mostly happen in cold climates when maintenance is not done properly on schedule. I'd be more concerned about oil in the harness from the sensors which is more common. There's also the scare topics of timing chains and bad cylinder liners, but honestly I think any of these are rare, just the few people who get issues are loud about it in forums.

I had the same thing happen to my 2013 GL with the leather dash. Once it started peeling there is no way to fix the original Dash. Replacing it wasnt really that difficult. If I recall it took me about 3-4 hours start to finish, nothing too complicated. I priced a new leather dash and i wasn't willing to spend the $2000 + for a new one and couldnt find a decent leather covered dash at a salvage yard plus i was worried that a used leather one would eventually start peeling off as well. I ended up buying a used dash that had MB tex on it instead of leather. Once installed you didn't even notice it was different plus i didnt have to worry about it peeling in the future. My dash was black so it blended in well.

I'm going with the other one. I found the previous owner through the power of social media groups. Got to discuss recent maintenance and all.

I got a 2015 with 89k miles and all the options I want for $32,500. There was a nice white one in Sarasota Audi dealer with only 40k miles for $41k, but I don't really like white.
