Replacing Rear Bumper Step Pad

Anyone done this and what are the steps to remove the old one? It's an '13 ML350 and I have looked at it from under the bumper but cannot see how to release the pop-in clips.

Taken from my DIY Curt Trailer Hitch Install...
" Wire was run/hidden under rear chrome trunkplate… easily removed by a center Torz screw located under spare tire compartment door. Once screw is removed, carefully pry upwards, and plate will release from spring clip inserts!"
Torz screw is facing rearwards, towards gate latch, just under spare tire compartment door..... I used an upholstery/trim plastic pry bar... no marks!
