20inch down size to 19

Hello there,

first post on the forum.

as my tires are getting to the point switching out i'm thinking down size to 19inch wheels and have the higher profile 50 vs the 45 on the 20s.

just want to know are there any noticeable difference in terms of comfort. i know the lower profile handles better, buts its a suv i don't drive hard on it. i just want a comfortable ride.

so just wondering if it's worth the money buying a new set of wheels vs just buy a new set of tires.

or maybe anyone in cali want to trade?

TIA

Hi! I've owned most ML's with 19's and my current has 20's I really don't notice much of a difference in ride. I do seem to sit a bit higher but that is the only noticeable difference. Perhaps you can test drive one with 19's prior to making the expense, maybe one with similar age and mileage at your dealer. Wheels and tires are a big expense

Do you have the airmatic on your ML? If yes then you will not see any real difference. If you have the stock spring and shocks then maybe just maybe only a small difference. Sometimes 19" tires cost more than 20". I would stick with the 20" for possible resale and aesthetics look.

Keep the 20s, but search for a softer tire. High performance tires tend to be less forgiving of the road surface. I ran Hancooks on my 08 but have Conti DWS on my 13 now. Not a big difference, but the DWS was the widest tire I could fit on the 20s. And I do have the airmatic which makes a real difference in ride between the sport and comfort.

I would also note, that the 13's had a run of bad shock absorbers of which my car had, once they were replaced my ride significantly improved. The symptoms were rough ride, a loose clang sound over some bumps.
