EASY! Engine Air Filter change ML350 3.5L W166

This post lays out the steps necessary to change the Engine Air Filter easily.
Thanks to previous post about how to change the engine air filter, I decided to take on the task myself.
https://mbworld.org/forums/new-m-cla...as-engine.html

I was able to do it for the first time in 1/2 hour and did NOT need any special tools. [no clic-R pliers, no E10 socket, no air-sensor connector problems]

Simple Tools
7/16" socket
T25 Torx bit
1/4" open wrench
Towel

1. Move rubber hood seal

2. Remove dust cover and cabin air filter housing

3. Remove small firewall panel just behind engine air filter. Use 7/16" socket for the two screws. (Don't drop them). This will allow access to the Torx screw located in the back of the filter housing.

4. Remove flexible snorkel tube by pushing gently on the two tabs attaching the flexible hose to the engine air filter housing. Push the snorkel down to in order to loosen the tabs where the snorkel attaches to front of the intake. Remove snorkel tube.

5. Remove the 3 T25 Torx screws on the side of the housing using T25 bit and a 1/4" open wrench. The last screw can be reached with firewall panel removed. It's an awkward tight space so be patient. Use a towel to prevent dropped tools, use TWO hands, keep your fingers under the bit, and move very SLOWLY.
(**place towel under screws so you DON'T DROP the bit**)
(**hold the T25 bit carefully with one hand and turn a little at a time with wrench using another hand**)
(**slowly unscrew about 1/2" only; you do not need to remove the screw**)

In the photo, I am using one hand (the other for taking photo). I would use one hand on/under the bit and use the other hand to turn the wrench. It takes about 20 quarter turns to get the screw loose enough.

6. Open engine filter housing cover; the two lower hinges keep it in place.

7. Lift cover up and slide it forward.

8. Change filter and clean any foreign objects (dust, leaves, bugs). I recommend MB OEM filter, but I bought K&N instead.

9. Reverse all steps. ***Take ALL precautions to avoid DROPPING tools***

It took a total of 40min to change cabin dust filter, 2 combination filters, engine air filter and take photos for this first time ever installation.

Hope that this helps!!
Richard

No problems at all. Very easy and saves money. It does require working in a tight space so I think it could be easy to drop tools. So....make sure you take precautions in dropping screw/screwbits. RH

I found telescopic magnet and mirror are very helpful.

Thanks for your tutorial.

Very interested in your thoughts on the K&N replacement, let us know how that works out after running a few days for the computers to react to the different level of airflow (if there is any). Curious on effect on mileage and perceived power changes if any. Thanks
