Simple Questions looking for Simple Answers

I have a 2014 ML550 4Matic. I am getting conflicting information from various sources so thought I would try here.

Is the transfer case a part of the transmission? If so, does this mean that the transfer case uses transmission fluid and is changed by default when the transmission is serviced. Otherwise, if it is separate, does it take transmission fluid, or a differential fluid? If a differential fluid, what weight?

I was told by MB that the front and rear diff for the 4Matic use 75W-95 fluid. Can anyone confirm?

He also told me that my tranny fluid needs changing every 70K miles, but my manual states 40K. I'll be doing at 30K regardless.

Thanks in advance...

Transfer case is separate from tranny. You will need to change the oil independently. Not sure what oil is used in the transfer case.

I did a little more research and it appears to use transmission fluid. Also looks straightforward to change with easy access to the fill and drain plugs. And by easy I mean two plugs that are accessed without removing any other parts. I also understand the diff's can take 75W-90. Owner's manual states to change the tranny fluid at 70K.

It's my understanding that the transfer case is different, and the fluid type is dictated by the year and VIN. My independent tech called MB and was told what color/fluid to use based on that info. Hope that helps.

I had the Trans fluid changed today on my 2014 ML 550. According to the Tech it is the Blue Trans fluid. He also stated that the same fluid is to be used on the transfer case. Amsoil, which I use for everything else, has an ATF that conforms to those specs so I plan to do it myself with Amsoil.
