Yeah, another stoopid question from a newb...
The ML350 Bluetek I want to buy had a start/stop button rolling around in the cup-holder. "Allah Akbar", I exclaimed while being what seems to be politically correct in Canuckistan, and stuck it into the ignition slot. Already had the fob in my pocket, so I hit the button expecting to hear the "roar" of a docile 240Hp diesel come to life. Uhhhh, nuthin. Not even a beep.
So like, what the hell? What's the button for?

That's exactly what its for. The one you have may not be the correct one. It was just thrown into the cup holder before delivery. Each one is specific to the car. Dealer can help sort it out.

That's the standard procedure for my GC as well, but you still made my heart go a-pitter and a-patter LOL. Ran out to the garage to try it, just in case I hadn't pushed the brake.
Alas, 'twas not meant to be. It says "key not detected" and "Remove start button and use key" or something to that effect.
You were on a roll for awhile there, though *wink*

The push start button only works if the key is detected in the car. If the key battery is low (or not the good type, I remember you can squeeze the wrong battery in, it will fit but wont supply enough power to the key fob) then the key is not detected, and the car will ask you to insert the key to start. This way the car communicates with the key through the IR sensor and not via radio transmission. Much less power needed.

Checked the battery, it's at 2.6 volts. But as per the owner's manual, the red battery-check light doesn't light up to confirm that it's in good shape when I hit the lock/unlock button. I replaced the CR2025 with a CR2035 which is the same voltage but thicker, therefore higher in capacity.
Allah Akbar, it worked! Stuck the start-stop button in, hit it & watched in amazement as the dash lit up and the engine started.
So, can I buy you a steak dinner?
