2013 BT air filters

So after running around town to find air filters, I decided to get down to the task. Much to my chagrin, I found that the filters I'd been given weren't close to what I needed. I've never seen this before, but my air filters are also the cover of the air filter boxes.

I don't think the links work. I miss/hate photobucket.......

Anyways, I figured I'd at least tap the filter to get some dirt off it. Honestly, there was precious little dirt on it. They even looked relatively clean, nothing like the pics I've seen posted by others. And again, I have screens on the two air-inlets under the leading edge of the hood. Everyone seems to complain about how their air filters get plugged up quick, doesn't anyone else have these screens?

I don't have those screens for sure. Last time I had to replace both sides after 10K, they were too dirty and they are very small to begin with.

Can you see the pics? If you can, then I'll snap one of the screens. Are your filters integral to the plastic filter covers?

FYI, my filters are the original ones with about 15k miles on them.

By the book, life time is 40k which is crazy, on this forum you can find a lot of infor on how often you need to change them. I remember reading somewhere there is MB TSB on air filters must be changed every 18K.

Yup, those are the same as mine. I wonder why you have no screens on your. Did they decide that the screens were too restrictive?
Regardless, the filters are a PITA to replace. I've seen a post about how one guy drilled a hole thru the plastic cowl over the filter covers to get access to that rear bolt. I think I'll do the same thing, then seal the hole with a snug-fitting plug.

IMHO, for air filters, number of miles is irrelevant. What is relevant is how dirty the filter is. So, it depends on the environment where the vehicle is driven.
I check air filters and cabin filters during every oil change and I change them before they get clogged dirty. This has nothing to do with miles-interval.

This is what my old filter looked like vs the new one after a little more than 35k miles. From now on I will change them more often

Was not sure, but from the size of the bug that made it to the filter I guessed not. Just checked and no I do not have screens.

Then I don't get it at all. The filters on my 2013 (@ 15k miles) look almost new, but I have screens. None of you guys have these screens. So either my truck was a 1st-production model and they realized afterwards that the screens were causing too much restriction, or.....I have no idea
