New member - 2001 AMG S55 - from Colombia, South America...

Hey guys!

This is a great site, very informative and useful. A few months ago I purchased a grey-market (for this country) imported 2001 AMG S55. It was in a state of disrepair and the previous owner (some rich MD) has, like, 13 other cars so he didn't care about the S55. Amazon, ebay and all others to the rescue!

New suspension from Strutmasters, because, obviously the ABC had been neglected beyond any possible attempt to repair... new bushings, sway bars, control arms, bearings, etc. Not an easy job, but well worth it. Ride height doesn't seem to be an issue, IMHO.

All oils, coolant, brake fluid and R134 A/C gas flushed and topped off. Despite the capping off of the hydraulic pump for the suspension, I am keeping the same steering pump and therefore, buying the required oil was mandatory. Had to go to the dealer, which charges $72/liter; I think it's a ripoff but then again, there are like 10 S-series in this country, so inventory doesn't move much.

This is an awesome car and past the ABC issues it's relatively reliable. Present issues with mine? Yaw/ lateral accel sensor not working, so of course ABS light on, speedo not working. Fuel Level is crazy, despite the fact I replaced the unit today, so I think speedo and fuel gauge issues might be related to the instrument cluster. Any ideas? Lastly, sunroof liner has become loose so I'll be gluing it in the upcoming days.

I am sharing some pictures so I get to show off my freshly restored pride & joy, do share your thoughts. Thanks!!!

Hi Voland!

It's neither, this is the initial atmospheric version with "only" 354 bhp. While I think the extra 137 hp are nice, the power delivery is flatter and suits my driving style better. I took the old girl to a night in town, I just love this car. :zoom:

Welcome nice looking ride

Thanks DBLDPR!

I disassembled the instrument cluster, in order to try to solve the fuel gauge/speedometer issue to no avail. Below some pictures of the ordeal. It wasn't a total waste of time, as I also replaced the A/C and air cabin filters, which is somewhat easier. I guess some people would let go of these two things, but over the years I have become anal about this kind of stuff. Any suggestions?

I have only had to work on a 57 Chevy instrument cluster and that only involved 4 items which I bought on line and replaced. I have no idea on the new cars but someone out there should be able to help you. Open a new thread just asking about the instrument cluster. Hopefully someone will answer. Good luck

Grats on the pickup! I believe there are newer DEPO headlights I'd consider where they're open clear housing with projectors behind instead of the diffused ones you have now you should consider. That would really go a long ways towards upgrading her look with something more modern and befitting a flagship S class :y

Thanks for your comments! Regarding the headlights... IDK, since bringing her back to life was somewhat expensive and I really like to keep her stock. However, I have thought about it and I think I'd go full replacement; symbol, grille and headlights so I'd get the full modern look. It's "just" around $500 so in a few months, maybe. Glad you like her!!!
