Lou and Gary are at Mercedes Benz Manhattan. I, Chucky, bought the car from them.

You read my mind! Lol

Either going to push for the Michelin Pilot Super Sports or whatever is available on the S600 (so long as they are not run flats).

I really can't imagine them fighting me on this.

Your already use of your insurance and the awesome letter you wrote sounds like a 100% sure thing to me. I can't think of any logic against it.

I don't think anyone has answered my question yet so I will ask it again. Are the RFT's also a bad choice on the 18 inch wheels? If so, I will need to talk to the dealer and have these replaced when the car is ready for delivery. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I didn't see this. From what I hear from other dealerships, including BMW - Run Flats across the board are not being well received.

They are made of a different kind of compound which seems to be harder over bumps.

Thanks guys. That's what I was afraid of. Do you guys know if good non RFT tires are readily available at dealerships?

Kratos and I are waiting to hear back from our dealerships and will post our findings as soon as we hear.

If they don't have them at the dealer, we are settled on ones from Tirerack.com so long as the dealership will pay for them, and transfer our warranty to the new tires.

Take this for what it's worth. I just talked to the assistant sales manager at the dealer and he said that he does not agree with the RFT's criticism. He said that MB makes sure about comfort and safety and that these tires are soft rubber or something to that effect. They are also very expensive. They have not had any complaints from S550 owners. Is it possible that they made some improvements on the RFT's since you guys had your S550's delivered a couple months ago or so?

In any case, he did tell me that I could always change to regular all season tires but there is obviously no spare.

Salesman BS. I would expect them all to say that. Also I wouldn't expect anyone to complain right now, because it's too early, the car is super hot, and everyone is excited.

I will probably not take any action until I drive the car (after delivery) for a while to see how I like the RFT's on my standard 18 inch wheels. It's good to know that I have a good option.

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
Last weekend I drove an E63S, then an S63, then another E63S. The S63 was not nearly as pleasant as the E because of the run flats. The tire harshness was very obvious in the back to back to back drives. We ordered a new E63S for my wife but walked away from the S63 because of the run flats despite the fact it had the interior color and options I wanted. I will keep my S65 a while longer until MB offers the spare as an option. The salesman, who still sold us one car, said we were not the first to comment on the tires.

It is an absolutely wonderful car compromised by an unfortunate tire choice. I feel I should not have to spend another $2k to swap tires when buying a $162k car.

This is unfortunately a trend that will become more popular as it makes the weight/ fuel consumption numbers look better.

I have two extra sets of new run flats in the garage due to this. The new normal

Wow

Thanks for sharing. I know my mind is now made up. My only option for MB will be for them to purchase me 4 non runflat tires, install them, and put the warranty on them.

This is saying run flats give you worse mileage, even when taking into account the lack of a spare:

I don't think you have a choice tbh. I sure didn't.

MB of Houston says they don't have a recommended tire replacement.....but they confirmed a second time that they'll honor the warranty on any tire I choose.
