Winter Setup
Since the s63 comes with summer performance, I decided that I'm going with a whole set of wheels and tires just for winter. I had my dealer order a set of wheels - i did 4 all the same using front wheel specs and ordered the Pirelli Sottozero II tires from Tirerack. If memory serves the other option are Blizzaks.
I also have the rubber mats and cargo mats waiting for me.
Now all I need is the car!

I was concerned about the look of the wheels being smaller in the rears but mercedes, tire rack and the parts director all suggested 4 of the same for best winter performance, so I'll take my chances. Narrower wheels are supposed to handle the elements better.
The original setup were 255 in the front and 285 in the rear.
For the tires i went with these:

Makes no sense other than it allows to rotate the wheels and that the snows may not be available in the specific tire sizes.
Since the car is 4matic, I will get all seasons again. Works great in Minnesota winters and never had traction issues. SUV for big snow storms...
I do have the Pirelli snows on our SL in a staggered setup. Looks great and drives well in snow...
Staggered summer tire setup
Not recommended but sensible driving + 4matic and made it home with no white knuckle moments

I'll bet that the studded tires aren't of much use while you're wintering in California or Arizona.
