Winter Setup

For those who live in the cold and snowy climates, what's your winter setup going to be?

Since the s63 comes with summer performance, I decided that I'm going with a whole set of wheels and tires just for winter. I had my dealer order a set of wheels - i did 4 all the same using front wheel specs and ordered the Pirelli Sottozero II tires from Tirerack. If memory serves the other option are Blizzaks.

I also have the rubber mats and cargo mats waiting for me.

Now all I need is the car!

May I ask how much your winter sets were in total. As well, since all 4 tires are the same size, would the rear tires look weird since they aren't staggered (as in you can see a gap between the fenders if you get what I am saying?) Thanks!

The wheels I got for $1100 each. I got the wheels in the pictures attached

I was concerned about the look of the wheels being smaller in the rears but mercedes, tire rack and the parts director all suggested 4 of the same for best winter performance, so I'll take my chances. Narrower wheels are supposed to handle the elements better.

The original setup were 255 in the front and 285 in the rear.

For the tires i went with these:

I am looking at a square setup for a 15 AMG S63 4matic. Does the square setup vs. staggered work well for the winter setup?

Thanks!

It's one of those urban myths that same tire size is better than staggered for snows.
Makes no sense other than it allows to rotate the wheels and that the snows may not be available in the specific tire sizes.

Since the car is 4matic, I will get all seasons again. Works great in Minnesota winters and never had traction issues. SUV for big snow storms...

I do have the Pirelli snows on our SL in a staggered setup. Looks great and drives well in snow...

I had the unfortunate timing of accepting delivery on a S63 the day before a freak storm dropped 6 inches midday with me an hour away from home

Staggered summer tire setup

Not recommended but sensible driving + 4matic and made it home with no white knuckle moments

Wolfman-What size All-Season's do you use with the AMG S63?

interesting thread. and almost timely certainly. so - not to hijack - but for those that have the 20" (sport + 1) goodyear (barf) tyres like me -- and for those that had them in the winter last year (i didn't as i took delivery in march '15) - - how did they perform in the cold icy snowy winters? i have the 4matic (big deal without proper tread, i know) but the tread on these goodyear 20s don't look like they are gonna cut through chicago winters. sigh.

It's a S550 with 20" staggered wheels (sport package) I will buy the Continental extremecontact DWS again (had them on the BMW). Cheap, long lasting, quiet, good ride comfort for a sedan and good grip in the winter. 245/275 staggered.

Seems they do good work was checking out their site. I hate going to the car wash here paying $20 for the VIP and they don't do good work. I have to tell them to re run the car multiple times. Hate car washes.

i didn't get anyone to respond to my enquiry (above) centred on experience with these oem goodyear 20s in the ice and snow. so i researched it myself and learned they will *not* work in the cold or slush or snow of chicago or similar winter climate. so to answer the o/p's question, my set up will be to go from a 20" existing sport +1 wheel to an 18" wheel fitted with michelin alpin dedicated snows. for the months of november through march.

I'll bet that the studded tires aren't of much use while you're wintering in California or Arizona.
