I don't understand this, but why can't you close the trunk from the remote? You can open it from the remote, so you should be able to close it from the remote. Yes, you can hit the button on the actual trunk to close it, but if you can open it from the remote, why can't you close it?
The GL 550 lets you close it from the remote, Escalade does, etc. The w221 didn't let you, but I thought the w222 at least would, but does not.
Thoughts? I think it would be a good feature.

Correct, I know all of this, this is how it's been since 2007. My point being that the GL and other vehicles can "close" it from the "remote".

I thought it was a safety issue. You must be close to the car except if closing from the remote key where you cannot be sure if someone will bit hit by the closing trunk lid. Odd if it works from distance on the other models.

There is a kit for it , it's made by Kufatec ,don't know if it voids warranty though

Regarding the trunk Auto closing
I bought a 2006 Mercedes S500 4matic with keyless go I found out that my hydraulic system for my trunk was leaking are taking on air however you want to look at it the bottom line is the trunk lid open slowly but it still works I never got around to fixing it but it was closing automatically by itself and I brought it to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out come to realize that it was actually the struts that holds the trunk up was old and will slowly collapsing when the trunk is open once the trunk Falls solo the auto assist presume that you want to close the trunk so the trunk closes itself because I have a leak in my hydraulic system I bought two struts but I only change the one to the driver side just to stop the trunk from falling and that's fix my problem if your hydraulic pump is working properly then I recommend changing both but I didn't want to stress up my unit because it's already not working properly replacing one strut was good enough and I'm still using it to this day without fixing my hydraulic pump but that's why your trunk is falling the struts on the trunk is what list the trunk of not the motor all the hydraulic does is closed the trunk not open it

My 2015 S550 the trunk closes down fine with the remote, you just need to hold down the button. Same with my 2018 E63 AMG. On my old 2012 E63 AMG wagon though it bothered me, you could not close down the hatch with the remote as you said and there was no foot kick system under so the only way to close the hatch was either the bottom on the hatch door or the button on the drivers door of the car.

I just closed mine today with the FOB Remote and all it took was just a click on the trunk button and it fully closed. I did not even need to hold the button down. Click once it opens then again it closes fully. I bought my car used last summer so maybe something was changed, I dunno, but I like it how it is as I use the trunk a lot for all my sports gear. I do know on my 2018 E63 AMG you defiantly have to hold the trunk button on the FOB to close the hatch. Does make me wonder if the 2015 S550 I have was tweaked by the previous owner if nobody else's 2014-2108 S550 will do this.

Sounds like maybe they made a change partway through the model year of 2015. I remember on my 2012 when you tried to close the hatch it would just make a clicking sound and not close, like something was locked out. Do those who have a 2014 or 2015 that does not close hear this clicking sound when they try to close it with the FOB? If so maybe the interlock could be released inside the mechanism or something.

Short and sweet
Went inside and took coat hat and boots off and opened it again from inside the house and wouldn’t close back again. Get redressed and go outside and come to this brilliant conclusion.
green flashing button is the trunk safety open and you can only close the trunk when the keyless entry senses the key.
So basically they want you be there to see the trunk smash the hands of the person you don’t like.
Hope this helps……keep this post alive. 😂

Jeez guys, how hard is it to just reach up and close the thing with your hand? All this fancy motorized/remote stuff is kind of silly, isn't it?
BTW, speaking of trunk lids, why do Mercedes lids spring all the way open when you click the remote, pull the switch, etc.? It seems like every other car I've owned the lid just pops up an inch or so. If it's raining, I'd prefer it to open it only far enough to get something in or out; once it's fully open it's exposed to the weather.

Thank you !!!
This is my third S 4MC and I just went out and tried the FOB and I’ll be damn. It actually closed by using the fob. If you guys hadn’t told me to hold the button, I would have kept going out to close it manually. I like to close it with the key because I’ll bring in the groceries and leave the trunk open and like to close it from inside the house. Thank you !!!!!

Love to know more about that setting! Not mentioned in my manual in the section on trunk opening and closing. In fact, it mentions a couple of times:
"The trunk lid swings upwards when opened.
Therefore, make sure that there is sufficient
clearance above the trunk lid "
