Canadian Purchasing in the States

Hi,

Is it possible for a Canadian to order a W222 in the states or order a US spec W222 from a Canadian dealership? It's not a matter of pricing but rather the options available; all Canadian W222s come with 4-Matic and you can't option MBC with 4-Matic.

Would the dealers in the states place an order in for a Canadian or would it just and an outright no, or should I speak with my dealer here first? I'm also assuming if it's possible, then I would have to purchase the car outright and not be able to lease it. Would bringing a car up from the states void the warrantee?

Thanks

Hi,

I contemplated exporting a US W222, but found out that odometer CANNOT be changed from miles to kilometres.

No software hack or dealer change available yet either.

So switching from miles to kilometres in the settings would change everything?

All you have to do is change the settings for the display for the speedometer to Km/Hr, I believe. It's not a fixed speedometer as in other Mercedes-Benz models - it's a fully electronic display where you can change the ticks from mph to km/hr.

The 2015 S550 does for sure come with the option to choose between km/h and mp/h.

So would there be any way of getting a S550 with MBC in Canada?

Just a note…the speedo can most definitely be changed from mph to kph. My car was set in mph when I picked it up in Germany. It was easy to change the option in the settings before I left Sindelfingen ( steering wheel and cluster setting, not a command setting). I don't know why anyone would say that could not be changed. I used kph in Europe but I could also set alternate display speed to mph to help me know how fast a particular kph was until I got used to it. So in fact, speedo and odometer was in metric but the car still displayed a little mph. They thought of everything.

I want to think I have misunderstood your reply as it is so easy to change. Who told you this was not possible?

So I found a contact at MBUSA that can help me with ordering some out of range options for my upcoming US E Class. It may be possible for you to find a similar contact for Canadian cars at MBCA. I'll ask my contact at MBUSA next time I speak with him about the feasibility of what you're trying to achieve- but don't hold your breath.

Thanks. That'd be awesome if they'd let me. Should I just email MB Canada and ask whether it's possible or would they be no help?

I'm. 99% sure you can not do it. You can buy a used one if you find it with the options. I needs to have a compliance certificate from mb and there is some bumper safety checks etc. Daytime running lights.

Look at Riv.CA for more info

2011-2015 are admissible. May need some mods which a mb Canada dealer must preform and certify.

If I drive a CPO car across the border, do I just have to pay duties and that's it? However, will the dealers even sell to a Canadian?

keep in mind, AFAIK, when buying us benz, they make you sign a statement stating that you do not intend to export it.

Actually, I'm not trying to save money; after currency conversion and duties, the price will be the same as the Canadian prices. The only I'm interested purchasing in the states is because the S550 isn't offered WITHOUT 4-Matic in Canada thus I can't get ABC and MBC.

The export agreement is only for 2 years and you can pay the fine and export whenever you wish.

Why would you not want the 4Matic living in Canada? From the various posts I read here, MBC is not the greatest invention by mankind.

I have an ML for the purposes of poor weather and regarding MBC, should it work well or not it's still based on ABC and that's the integral point. However, is handling on the W222 with Airmatic a lot better than the outgoing model with Airmatic?

The W222 is my first MB so I don't know from first hand experience if the W222 handling with Airmatic is improved over the W221. However, from everything I have read the answer is yes. It is better.

Based on your experience, do you notice any body roll or is it minimal? Would you just recommend to stay away from the hassle and order in Canada?

I would say that any body roll is very minimal. I can also tell you that I previously owned an LS 460L. The handling on the new S550 is much better than on the LS.

It's obviously up to you as to where you want to order your car, but I know what I would do as I have already hinted. But, you are the one that needs to be happy with what and where you order.
