Next S-Class to Receive Gesture-Based Controls

We all know the S-Class previews mainstream car technology of ten years in the future. Speaking to Auto Express, Mercedes chief interior designer, Jan Kaul spoke about the next S-Class and what the car's technology will entail. Hint: you won't need buttons.

Kaul said that Mercedes wants to move away from buttons and go to a gesture-based control unit, much like that of the Xbox Connect system. Essentially the car's system would be able to be controlled by simple gestures and wouldn't need an interface that has tactile buttons.

I'm with you. With all of the technology when something breaks everything stops. I remember the instrument cluster recall, the gear shift stuck in park problem that still exist and could have been given more attention in the build of the car. Electronics are really nice but can be crazy expensive when they break down. In most cases you can't just repair one part or solder a joint or two - the owner will end up having to replace the whole unit.

If Mercedes wishes to do something really nice and appease their customer base at the same time why not reinstate the free maintenance program at least for the S-Class or even better extend the warranty to 5 years. Now that makes a whole lot of sense to me. We're talking 100k cars here.

Has anyone actually tried to use the xbox kinect? Trying to hit an icon with that thing is worse than trying to type a 6 line txt message on an iphone one handed. Talk about an insane distraction when driving!!!!
