S-Class Coupe with 9G-Tronic

Just noticed that the RWD version of the S500-Class Coupe (aka S550 in the US) can now only be ordered with the 9-speed tranny (at least in Europe).

The 4matic version, however, still shows with the 7G-tronic plus. This would explain that the US version would stay with the old transmission for a while longer, since only the 4matic is available in the US.

Be interesting to see how those two cars compare in tests besides fuel consumption (lower in the 9G by 12%)

Real question is how reliable/smooth is this new box, esp vs a 500+lb-ft motor

Kinda like the considerations of 4Matic/Airmatic/run-flat/crap tires vs MBC/perf tires&forged wheels: stuff MB continually fails to figure out vs priorities of actual customers who understand various risk/reward trade-offs of any engineering choice

Common sense suggests MPG deltas are fairly irrelevant on $150+K commuter coupes largely driven in short daily <35MPH commutes in places like SF or BH where all these cars are ~10MPG critters whether 550 or 63 or 65

Need to kill the absurd stop-start/eco mode junk which is at best annoying and at worst, if failing/hesitating in traffic, creates risks of being rear-ended, etc, defeating many of MB's otherwise superb active/passive safety attributes.....just as do MCT/DCT which MB has yet to have optimized for real-world use, despite years of trying....

Don't think torque is an issue at all given that the tranny is designed to handle up to 737 ft-lbs. Reliability we'll see but MB's reliability ratings are excellent these days.

Agree with you 100% of crap-flats and limiting the S-Class coupe options severely (no MBC, RWD, curve tech, etc).

Fuel consumption is a big deal for all car manufacturers though (EPA ratings/taxes) and people alike. Hence the stupid start/stop systems of which MB is actually considered the gold-standard.

Gas prices matter less here but in many places where gas can run to $9/gallon, people care wether the car is over $100k or not...
You can see that in Europe where only a tiny fraction of S-Classes are even V8's.
