I have a technical question for you, is it possible for you to measure the distance between the two screws of the front license plate for the Euro del car? I'm trying to convince MB to allow me to use a tow hook mount instead of mounting the front bracket and I want to predrill all the holes necessary ahead of time to make sure it'll be a smooth install.

Also how's the weather treating you there this time of year?

Exactly 10 and half inches. Have a honey blonde for me when you get to Germany. Weather is always sunny here in Cal.

@MDrill Thank you so much for posting that for me! Looks like MB denied my request anyways. heh

When did you go to Europe for ED on the S550?

The COE will mount the plate for you. They did this after I went in a looked at the car before the tour started. We dropped off our stuff in the COE, did the reveal of the car (pulling the cover off is really a cool COE experience) and went to the factor tour. The plate was on when we came back. Is the case that Washington state does not use front plates and you want to avoid the hole? I ask as in Florida we do not have front plates, but I have my German plate on the front and my SunPass external transponder at the bottom of the plate. It looks great and it a great conversation starter (as it the big D on the back window which I have left there on purpose). I love the external transponder as it keeps the windshield clutter-free.

Awesome thread. Thanks for posting.

It reminds me of my 2014 S550 Euro Delivery nearly a year ago. Also, Through H.Haemmer.

This past summer. We really enjoyed nice weather. Forecast told us rain for most of our trip but turned out otherwise. Lucky.

Hmm I see. I am required to run a front plate in WA but would rather use a drilless solution. Interesting that the folks at MBUSA keep saying it comes from the factory with the holes already- there's nothing they can do blah blah blah. Maybe I should just buy my tow hook and bring it there and plead with them to let me use it?

And how do you plan to do that? The front plate holder will be pre mounted at the factory as it is the law in Deutschland. My buddy who euro delivered his Turbo S had a discussion about this with his Philly Porsche dealer and the dealer ended up patching up the holes just to shut him up. Haha. But I told my friend that he did worse by patching it up. That's killing the car twice!

The way it was explained to me on my Euro Delivery S Class:

Once the car is designated as "Euro Delivery", the front license plate bracket is put on while the car is going through the manufacturing line. In other words, if your car is a US "Euro Delivery" your car will come with a front license plate--period. They will not stop the production line for any of us to do a different procedure on a US "Euro Delivery" car--period.

I live in PA where a front plate is not required.

This is how it was explained to me since I did not want the front license plate. However, since my US delivery of the Euro Delivery S Class in February, I have kept the Euro Delivery plate on and it looks very nice in my opinion. I have had two separate people at gas stations engage me in conversation about the Euro Plate.

Tom, if I am understanding what you're saying correctly, when you first arrived at the Center of Excellence the front plate was not mounted on your car. When you went on the tour they prepped the car for European driving which included mounting the license plate.

What about the front license plate bracket? Was that already on the car when you arrived at the CoE?

From your photos it did look like the front bracket and plate were already on your car when they took the cover off. So from that, it seems like nothing can be done?

Right- that was the same explanation I got from my dealer but it seems to be contrary to what TomS is saying. Unless I am missing something?

I cannot answer for Tom directly but here is how Euro Delivery normal works--License Plate Bracket (the item that attaches to the Bumper with drilled holes into the bumper) is put on in the manufacturing process. The Plates will not be attached until the person arrives at the Kundencenter or Center of Excellence. The plates have 15 day expirations on them so they only get install the day of pickup. Hope this helps.

I'm wrong. I recall now. The bracket was there. He just put the plate in for me while I was gone. It was an exciting morning.

Still, I'm glad I gave the plate. It looks great and as I said, it gave me a place to put my toll transponder.

Apparently the 10 1/2 is different from mine. This looks like the rear license plate. The rear Euro Plate is drilled differently compared to the front.

My front plate was exactly 7 inches not the 10 1/2 inches quoted. The 10 1/2 is for the rear plate.
