The new s coupe is nice but I don't think it justifies the price they are currently getting (over $150k)
An s class sedan , if you don't go crazy on options , can be had in the $80k range with the $11-13k discounts dealers are offering plus the $4500 usaa coupon .
IMO the smart money if you must buy new is the s sedan . The smarter money though is waiting a few years when these will be under $30k and get one then , with a good warranty to mimic the new car warranty

Base model S will start at $95,000 according to MBUSA. However if you do factor in those discounts and get one in the range as you mentioned you will have very stripped down car( In the world of S Class buyers). I guess that would be good if you racked up lots of miles and use and did not want to worry about things breaking? Other then that I do not see the point of a basic S Class.

How exactly are you going to get a W222 S550 for under 30K? How many years do you think that will take?

People really need to stop quoting "first year sales figures" to justify their opinions on cars.
Newsflash: A new generation is supposed to outsell the old one. Simple inflation for one. Second, when a car is already seeing 10% discounts, that also contributes. Finally, there have been many cars, especially iconic nameplates from revered brands (who will even sell on their badge and name alone) that sell in droves in the first 1-3 years, then drop off dramatically. If we're gonna use sales as barometers, especially on cars that are priced at a premium so as to have a certain attraction of exclusivity as well, then wait until the facelift is coming out and notate discounts and market resale values to see truly how the market has reacted to a car.
Many upper market cars (not the S Class I assume) also have controlled supply to as to not over-saturate the market, which will also vary from generation to generation.
