I feel it is conservative, elegant and understated, while I feel that the W222 is uninspired and both boring and garish at the same time. That said, when you are driving, the cars are day and night. The ride of the S Class, I believe, is unmatched by any other make. The overall feeling of both opulence and security one experiences from behind the wheel of the S is just the best. And, lastly, to me, the sight of that little 3-pointed star leading the way at the front of my hood is just the icing on the cake. No, the A8L is gorgeous, but as long as they make it and I am still kicking, there will be an S Class sedan in my garage, even if it doesn't thrill me to look at it.
I do understand where you are coming from. The S class is something special. Me personally I am about looks ( call me shallow ) I see that you are located in Ca. And Honestly I would probably prefer the S class too if we had weather like you guys all year round. The Quattro system in the Audis is unlike any other. Snow doesn't even exist when you have Quattro. And plus its always fun to be able to do some snow drifting

4matic isn't a sleeper, had the unfortunate luck of having to drive 2 hours home a day after taking delivery of an S63 (summer tires) with 5-7 inches on the ground in NY

Sensible driving, no issues

I just can't stand the exterior blah of the Audi, the interiors are the opposite

I, too, like the Audi A8L. It is understated and large (207.4 inches long vs. 206.5 for the S, and 76.7 inches wide vs. 74.8). And hence, has a significant presence on the road or parking lot that is both modern and elegant. However, I think the S-class W222 will age better in appearance. Audi's (along with BMW, and forget the other luxury brands) tend not to age as well in my opinion. I still have that (psychological) sense of pride in an older S-class than when in other brands' older flagships. Just my $.02.

Oh, and getting back to the OP on new E versus S. The E will probably be and will need to be a more dynamic car than the S to maintain its distinct positioning within the MB line-up, and not infringe on the S-class. The S, to me, is the elder statesman CEO and the E more of the VP or EVP, waiting in the wings. Again my $.02 for whatever its worth.

I agree with you to a point. Yes older Audis have not aged as well. But I personally think when they switched over to the big grill the car aged really nicely. It also depends on the owner. I try to keep my cars in tip top shape.

You know, isn't that the truth? The "aging" thing has so much to do with how a car is cosmetically maintained. I know that whenever I see an older model of most any make, that looks like it just came off the showroom floor, it turns my head and I admire it.
So many older, high line cars end up in the hands of second and third owners who aspire to own one, but can't garage it at night, leave it parked on the street where it gets all banged up, the headlights discolor, the plastic parts fade, etc. then we have those folks who "customize" their second hand luxury cars, ala Pep Boys, J.C. Whitney, etc. and end up with real horror shows.
There's nothing like a spotless, factory original!

B-man, it does look nice...especially with the all black S-Line trim.

I would wait a year on the new E class to get the bugs out. Next refresh redesign is 2023. Next S class redesign is 2021
