Will it stop by itself?

Will the car stop by itself? 2014 S class with distronics but no night vision.

I admit to being chicken to test it myself.

I know that with the distronic plus in traffic, it will stop before hitting the car ahead of me.

But driving around town, without the distronic on, will it avoid a collision with the car in front of me? I got close enough once that it started beeping and made the brakes 'magic', but I manually stopped.

Will it stop if a pedestrian walks in front of it, while traveling at slow speed? The manual seems to indicate so, but I can't find any family that wants to show of the new feature.

And how does it handle crossing objects, say at an intersection?

I have read the manual, but it doesn't seem very clear.

Any clarification would be appreciated!

Hi,
Why don't you want to leave Distronic on? I don't wish to take any risks so I've just left distronic on 24/7 and it has helped me on numerous occasions.
Thanks

Yes it will, only as part of the PRE-SAFE with pedestrian recognition within the Driver Assistance Plus Package.
More information on the MBUSA site here and from Daimler media press release.

Check out Motor Trend's review of the S65 AMG starting at the 9:45 mark that shows PRE-SAFE in action.

Thanks for the information. Do you know at what speed it becomes active? If I park in front of my garage door, it seems to let me pull up and touch the door without complaining. That's OK, but if I were stopped at an intersection, and started forward, would it detect and stop me from wiping out a pedestrian that stepped in front of the car?

It seemed to let me scare the **** out of an older lady who almost whacked the car with her cane.

hopefully, this will help...taken straight from MBUSA's booklet on 'Cross-Carline Technologies' out of the section 'Intelligent Drive'. Explains functionality and speeds that relate to each system...

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist

BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist

PRE-SAFE Brake with Pedestrian Recognition

That's quite useful. Thanks.

How do I know which systems are in my car? (I know the distronics is there)

Now all I need to test is a willing pedestrian.

Maybe a full size scarecrow on a long breakable pole.

Thanks for the utube post. I wish I had a blow up person to try the auto pedestrian stopping.

Ah, but what is the 'turn on' speed....ex: > 5mph and what's the turn off speed at the low end? For the Bas Plus and Pre-Safe systems.

Which is why I think I can touch my garage door by inching up.

i THINK it's anything over 0mph...the caveat to that is that throttle is being pressed and not simply a rolling car from taking foot off of brake. i'm pretty certain that if you just let off of the brake, you will indeed roll into the door. that being said, i wouldn't try to accelerate into the door, either.
