Service A - cost

So my Service-A light finally came on which means I've had my car for 1 year now.

But, I only have 5,000 miles on it. Do I really need to go in for service A?

How much does Service A cost at a dealership vs. an independent garage shop?

thought it was time or miles....

I paid 158 for A service at the indy I use, that was on 11/24/14, car had 9500 miles on it, not sure how much a dealer takes for it......it's an oil and filter change with fluids topped off

My car is a 2014, I've had it for almost one year, and it only has 3900 miles! I don't think I'll take it in for service as the car is a lease - as long as the driving characteristics don't change, I think I'll lay off. Indies charge a lot less for Service A, but then you don't get a loaner if you have to drop it off.

My '14 S550 4matic had an A service Nov. '14 for $185 at my local MB dealer. This included 9 quarts of oil and a rental car the dealership provided while my car was at the dealership. The car had 10,000 miles on it at the time.

Service A is really cheap. Though you might have fewer miles some of the oil in the car breaks down and needs to be replaced. Also make sure you read the lease paperwork fine print to ensure you did not agree to service the car as required when you signed the paperwork.

At a minimum do an oil change at least once a year to maintain the engine performs its best. I am all for saving money but skipping the annual service on a gasoline car is not something I'd do personally.

If you want to save money you can have them just do a simple oil change. Most dealers will do this while you wait.

I like to be able to walk under my car, check things out, and learn about the car......try doing that at a dealer......there are a lot of interesting things under the S class that the shop guys were telling me about

Be careful if you have a lease. When I had my car in for service at a dealer I was asked if it was leased. I asked why did they need to know. The service adviser said that if you had a lease, you would be penalized if you did not perform maintenance items whether they were really necessary or not. As an example, he saw no problem going 18 months between service as long as the mileage limit was not exceeded for a non-lease vehicle.
