Questions on S550
Good morning!
I just took delivery last week of my S550 4Matic.
The car is incredible and it's great to find all the features that I have read here about for so long...
I just have a few questions that for some reasons I find hard to believe that Mercedes 'forgot' to add:
1. Memory Seats with SmartKey. The Memory is NOT linked to the key? you have to press the memory number when 2 people share the car? It doesn't adjust automatically? Really?
2. The center console's storage space is that little thin space below the cover? There's no way to open up the whole thing?
3. The front seats. I have all the packages to control and adjust them, but there is no way to adjust the side bolster on the bottom part of the seat? only the top part?
4. On all my 4 recent cars (past 2 years) the Navigation was always displaying the Speed Limit. No way to have that showing on the S550?
Thank you in advance, and please don't get me wrong. The car is sensational, but all the missing features that I have listed, were standard on my 2012 A8L, so I just find it surprising that Mercedes overlooked them.

I completely agree with all of your comments. These little things that other German car manufacturers build into their cars; Mercedes just doesn't do or is playing catch up.
1) Memory is not linked to the key like Porsche/BMW/Audi. Have to press and hold the memory key for it to adjust. On the bright side, you can have 3 stored settings.
2) Yes that is all the center console storage space you're gonna get.
3) Cannot adjust the side bolsters on the horizontal/cushion part of the seat.
4) No speed limit display option offered. Maybe on the refresh.
5) Child safety lock has to be mechanically flicked on/off on the door.

We love our 2014 S but there are deficiencies as you pointed out.
1) Not sure why MB won't do this when a lowly 2010 Mazda 6 and a 2012 Corvette GS we have in the family have this feature
2) Sounds like you have the rear climate zones as the front console space is severely limited due to the zone controls for the rear. Since we don't have rear passengers very often we opted to not have that feature in order to keep front console space.
3) Agreed, would be great to have control of horizontal seat bolsters
4) Nice feature but not sure why I would need it. Personally I don't miss it since I use the Distronic Plus so much.
5) Didn't realize this since we rarely have rear passengers.
In addition I wish the sunglasses holder was shaped differently as I have to be careful in how I position the glasses in order to close. Also wish more dedicated buttons were available for functions as it is too distracting to find items in the Command system.

2) My centre storage bin seems to be plenty large, but I don't have 4-zone THERMOTRONIC. Does adding 4-zone really reduce storage space that much?
4) Speed Limit Assist has been added for 2016 according to the Canadian DOG.
It uses the same physical cameras that we already have for Lane Keeping Assist, but the software up until now has only been programmed to recognize European (circular) speed limit signs. An update from Mercedes is unlikely to enable this in our cars, but I wonder if it'll be possible for coding to activate the feature in the future.

This is unfortunate that MB U.S. Models get options at a much later date. Speed limit assist has been around in the European S-Class for over 6 years. Re. the horizontal side bolder adjustment I need to check our BMW. I didn't think the car had that either. Does the Audi? Drove A8's extensively but they only had the length adjustments afaik.

Yes, the A8L has all of the features missing on the S550, although in terms of ride quality and overall car, there's no comparison....

I mount my escort with a windshield mount. The lack of 12v accessory plugs makes it very annoying to have to use the cigarette lighter plug because it partially blocks the cupholder. My model has the 110v plug for rear passengers, so it only has 1 12v plug in passenger area and 1 in trunk. why they got rid of the under passenger dash plugs is beyond me.

No! Please! I don't need it. First, my wife cannot drive my Mercedes. She has her own Tesla. My kids cannot drive my Mercedes. No valet can drive my Mercedes. The only one who can is my mechanic...and basically around the parking lot.

3. Move your butt. That will help.
4. I know what the speed limit is...the problem is I'm always driving faster than the posted speed limit. Also, the speed limit is posted every mile or two.

The folks on this forum never cease to amaze me. All 3 kids were trained on our S class.
The S class really should have the seat adjusted for each key - would make life a lot easier. At the very least, it should at least have one touch adjusting.

No, I do not allow my family to drive my S550. I have two cars. My Mercedes and my Hellcat Charger. Both are off limits to my wife and child. My daughter wouldn't be caught dead driving my Mercedes, anyway. She says it's an "old man's" car. My wife has her own car she likes...a Tesla. So, were all happy campers.

Then buy her a car of HER dreams, not yours. My wife wanted a Tesla, not a Mercedes. My daughter wanted a Nissan. To each their own. Like I said, my daughter wouldn't be caught dead driving a Mercedes...an "old man's car" according to her.

The point was much subtle than that. I bet you can figure it out.

Actually, my wife can have anything she wants also. She chose to have a Tesla. This point was not subtle at all, however I think you can figure it out. If your wife enjoys driving your Mercedes...Great! Buy her one!
